Overview

This is a Continental ARS 4-A long range radar sensor (also known by its type designation ARS 408-21), a 77 GHz FMCW (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) radar originally developed for automotive OEM distance and collision-avoidance control. The sensor measures distance, relative velocity via the Doppler principle, and object angle in a single measurement cycle, without needing a reflector, at a real-time scan rate of 17 scans per second. Its combination of long-range detection and fast, reliable object tracking has made it a common choice not just in vehicles but in industrial anti-collision and area-monitoring systems as well.

  • Long detection range: Effective detection radius of up to 70 m in short-range (SR) mode or up to 250 m in far-range (FR) mode, with a special software version capable of extending measurement range up to 1,200 m for high-RCS objects with a clear field of view.
  • Simultaneous multi-parameter measurement: Measures distance, relative velocity, and the angle between two objects at the same time, within one measurement cycle.
  • Reliable target detection: Built-in fail-safe detection and ghost-target filtering ensure that every reported target is a real one, even without additional external filtering.

Compatibility & Applications

Originally developed as an OEM automotive distance-control sensor, the ARS 4-A / ARS 408-21 is widely used as a general replacement for earlier ARS 30X and 40X series radar sensors and integrates via CAN bus with compatible control units or a dedicated radar PLC. Beyond automotive collision avoidance and headway control, it's applied to anti-collision protection for cranes (STS, RTG, RMG, gantry, and overhead cranes), autonomous and industrial vehicles such as AGVs, construction and agricultural machinery, far-field area monitoring of hazardous or restricted zones, road traffic and parking surveillance, and rail traffic bumper-approach detection.
