Modular safety-related PLC set for SIL 3 industrial protection and control systems

Overview

This set is a core building block for a HIMA HIMatrix F60 modular safety-related control system, combining a power supply, CPU 01 central processing module, a 32-channel digital input module, and a combined 24-input/16-output digital I/O module. Together, these modules form a foundational configuration capable of executing safety-critical control logic while acquiring and switching a substantial number of digital field signals, all within HIMA's SIL-3-rated HIMatrix architecture used across process control, protection, burner control, and machine control applications.

Key Features

  • CPU 01 — Central Processing Module: Executes and time-monitors the safety application program, supporting PROFIBUS DP, RS232, RS485, RS422, and INTERBUS communication interfaces; SIL 3, Cat. 4, PL e certified.
  • DI 32 — 32-Channel Digital Input Module: Provides 32 galvanically isolated safety-related digital inputs, arranged in groups for redundant/diverse wiring, with line control for detecting short or open circuits on emergency stop inputs.
  • DIO 24/16 — Combined Digital I/O Module: Delivers 24 galvanically separated digital inputs and 16 digital outputs on front-mounted pluggable terminals, with per-channel status LEDs and automatic safe-state fallback on fault detection.
  • Hot-swappable module design: Faulty modules can be replaced with the controller in a stop state without requiring full system reconfiguration.
  • Dual programming tool support: Configurable using either SILworX (CPU-OS V7 and later) or ELOP II Factory (pre-V7), covering both current and legacy HIMatrix installations.
  • Rail-mounted subrack architecture: Each module fits into the standard HIMatrix F60 subrack, with the power supply and CPU occupying fixed slots 1 and 2 and I/O modules in the remaining slots.

Technical Specifications

Power supply: 24V DC operating voltage across all modules (19.2–30.0V range on I/O modules); external 32A fuse protection recommended for the DIO module.

CPU 01: Communication via PROFIBUS DP, RS232, RS485, RS422, INTERBUS; input current 10 mA; output capacity 2A; operating temperature -20°C to +60°C.

DI 32: 32 galvanically isolated inputs in 4 groups of 7 plus 1 group of 4; line control for short/open-circuit detection on E-stop inputs.

DIO 24/16: 24 digital inputs / 16 digital outputs, pluggable terminals for cables up to 6 mm; ESD protection 6 kV contact / 8 kV air discharge; operating temperature -40°C to 70°C, IP20.

Safety certification: SIL 3 per IEC 61508/61511/62061; Cat. 4, PL e per EN ISO 13849-1; SIL 4 per EN 50126/50128/50129 (railway) on relevant modules.

Compatibility & Applications

This module set forms a working core of a HIMatrix F60 subrack and can be seamlessly combined with additional F60 modules — analog I/O, counter, or communication submodules — to expand the system. It's widely used in process control, protection systems, burner management, and machine tool control applications requiring TÜV-certified SIL 3 functional safety, and can be extended with SafeEthernet, PROFIBUS, or Modbus connectivity for integration with remote I/O and other controllers.
