Real-time 3D LiDAR "Puck" sensor for autonomous vehicles, robotics, and mobile mapping

Overview

This is a Velodyne VLP-16 "Puck," a real-time 3D LiDAR sensor that delivers 360° time-of-flight distance measurement with calibrated reflectivity data. An array of 16 infrared laser/detector pairs spins rapidly inside a fixed, weather-resistant housing, firing each laser roughly 18,000 times per second to build a dense, real-time 3D point cloud of the surrounding environment. This unit features the standard black housing. Compact, lightweight, and rated IP67 with no externally visible moving parts, the VLP-16 is a widely used sensor across autonomous vehicles, robotics, security, and mobile terrestrial mapping applications.

  • Dual return capability: Supports single and dual returns (strongest, last), useful for resolving multiple objects along the same laser path, such as through foliage.
  • Calibrated reflectivity output: Time-of-flight distance measurements are paired with calibrated reflectivity values, aiding detection of retro-reflective objects like signs, license plates, and lane markings.
  • Integrated web server: Built-in configuration and monitoring interface accessible via standard web browser, simplifying setup and diagnostics.
  • Eye-safe Class 1 laser: Operates at 905 nm wavelength and meets Class 1 eye-safe laser classification for safe operation around people.
  • Sealed, ruggedized housing: No externally visible rotating parts and IP67-rated sealing, built to withstand shock (500 m/sec² amplitude) and a wide operating temperature range.

Compatibility & Applications

The VLP-16 outputs standard UDP point cloud data compatible with Velodyne's VeloView visualization software as well as common robotics and mapping frameworks such as ROS, PCL, and DSR-based tools. It's widely used in autonomous vehicle perception, robotics navigation and obstacle avoidance, UAV and drone-based mapping, security and surveillance, and mobile terrestrial 3D mapping applications where real-time, long-range 360° environmental scanning is required. Note that an Interface Box or equivalent breakout cable is required to connect this sensor to a power source and host computer, and is not included with this unit.
