Overview

This is a Velodyne VLP-16 "Puck," a real-time 3D LiDAR sensor that delivers 360° time-of-flight distance measurement with calibrated reflectivity data. An array of 16 infrared laser/detector pairs spins rapidly inside a fixed, weather-resistant housing, firing each laser roughly 18,000 times per second to build a dense, real-time 3D point cloud of the surrounding environment. Compact, lightweight, and rated IP67 with no externally visible moving parts, the VLP-16 is a widely used sensor across autonomous vehicles, robotics, security, and mobile terrestrial mapping applications.

Compatibility & Applications

The VLP-16 outputs standard UDP point cloud data compatible with Velodyne's VeloView visualization software as well as common robotics and mapping frameworks such as ROS, PCL, and DSR-based tools. It's widely used in autonomous vehicle perception, robotics navigation and obstacle avoidance, UAV and drone-based mapping, security and surveillance, and mobile terrestrial 3D mapping applications where real-time, long-range 360° environmental scanning is required. Note that an Interface Box or equivalent breakout cable is required to connect this sensor to a power source and host computer, and is not included with this unit.
